“Tonight's a big game for us and then the next game's a big game for us” - Doc Rivers, still coaching, pretending the Bucks have big games.
🎙 Leading Off
If I can achieve anything, I want to fill your brain with all the wonder and imagination necessary to spend the day ignoring emails, tapping your pen on the desk and hosting PTI in your head. So with that, let’s start a Rundown:
- Charles Barkley claims the NBA TV schedule is too fragmented across platforms and hard for fans to follow. Bill SImmons seconds this motion. Do none of these people read KMARK?
- The Pirates are 9-2 in Spring Training, but no model has ever proven correlation between Spring Training and the regular season.
- The NFL Combine (like everything NFL) has swallowed college basketball attention. But it’s March now. So buckle up, because it’s Madness szn.
- 20ish NBA games left. A cursory look at any one day’s schedule is a binary exercise of contending teams playing teams very eager to Tank. Everyday has only a handful of games between two teams with equal interest in winning. Should they even play the games? Can one team forfeit before tip?
- The trail’s gone quiet and that has to mean the Bears are very much not moving to Indiana, but will rather wind up Arlington Heights.
- Since joining the Cavs, Cleveland is 6-1. Eeeeeeeveryone is getting sucked into this. So is Cleveland Finals bound? No.
- Arvel Reese is slipping down draft boards. YEP. You read that right! ARVEL REESE is slipping down draft boards. But he’ll probably slip back up the 200 mock drafts between right now and April.
- The Warriors (sans Steph and Jimmy Butler) are trotting out some of the most horrendous post-dynasty starting fives I’ve seen since the Dark Years Lakers with Ryan Kelly and Xavier Henry. It’s time for GSW to have tough conversations about how this dynasty imploded even with Steph performing at an extremely high-level (when healthy). The dynasty wasn’t going to last forever, but their inability to find replacement talent not for Klay but for any spot on this roster is a catastrophe. Gui Santos is a nice man (I think), having a nice February, but did he really need a 3yr extension.
- Wednesday is the first World Baseball Classic game. This deserves a Hard In the Paint. Not tonight, but jeez, it deserves it!
- You’re following this balls and strikes challenge system in the MLB right? If anything, it’s proving how accurate human umpires are, but it’s also going to be a massive bonus for an annual playoff game that hinges on a call. I’ve heard but not confirmed that the imagery we’ve seen of the strike zone doesn’t capture exactly what the MLB is judging. Imagine a more three dimensional dynamic zone. Not the silly box we’ve seen on television. But viewers (me), like the box. And we don’t want to see it disappear. It just represents something other than what the league uses to call balls and strikes.
- The Players Championship is this weekend. We should probably check in with the Hairy Putter…
